Rewriting My Story, Strengthened By My Past...

Everyone has their own diary, everyone has pages of good, bad, inspiring and not so inspiring.  The first twenty years of my life are filled with some pretty unimaginable experiences; experiences that typically do not yield success stories in life, but I rewrote my story by taking a horrendous amount of manure and fertilizing a pretty amazing lawn!  This life has given me the gift of empathy for others, a drive to succeed in the face of adversity, and a constant need to evolve.  I have learned that the key to my happiness is helping others.  With that said, what does my future hold when it comes to learning?  What will fill the future pages of my diary?  Building technical skills with movie making software to continue making compelling videos that raise awareness for wish-granting charities, bone marrow registries, etc.; taking classes given by the Make-A-Wish organization moving closer to my goal of becoming a wish coordinator; and tackling the ins and outs of writing and publishing a book as I plan to write one in hopes of inspiring others to have faith even when all feels hopeless.  Using the gift of my fractured past, and latest experiences, I am motivated to help others find some color in this black and white world.

Throughout my time at Michigan State, I’ve enjoyed my learning journey.  One course taught me the importance of taking an ordinary experience and making it extraordinary.  This skill is so important when it comes to engaging education.  Through the use of taking still photographs, video footage, and turning it into short, moving videos, I’ve learned how a compelling experience can change one’s view on something, or help move someone to become involved.  I have merged this new found skill with videos to help raise awareness in the wake of my son’s life-threatening illness, and I hope to further this skill by learning to use more advanced movie-making software packages.  Given that I learn best by doing, I will obtain video editing software for my Mac, and begin my journey into hundreds of video formats, creating dynamic slideshows, perfect soundtrack accompaniments, and finding the best possible sources for capturing video.  Ultimately, I want to create impactful movies, that raise awareness, and/or funds, for non-profit organizations.

Make-A-Wish Michigan, who has been granting wishes for children with life-threatening illnesses since 1980, has been a fundraising focus for me since 2010.  My hope was to become apart of a wish-granting team, working one-on-one with their wish children, facilitating wishes, making dreams come true.  My training begins as soon as I am done with my Masters through MSU.  In a strange twist of fate, my oldest son became seriously ill in 2014.  Within days of entering the hospital, we were out at University of Michigan discussing his chances of survival and course of action.  His lead doctor at U of M happens to be on the board for Make-A-Wish, and I found myself in the surreal moment of hearing that my son qualified for a wish (something a mother never wants to hear).  At first, my son met this with complete apprehension; however, once he embraced it, he found happiness in having something to look forward to.  His wish was for a man cave, and what kept him going in the hospital through chemo and transplant, were his endless lists of what he would like within it.  When we arrived home post-transplant, with his siblings coming and going from school during cold and flu season, he required isolation for eight months due to his lack of immune system.  The man cave was a perfect solution; however, Make-A-Wish had so many wishes to grant, and we couldn’t accomplish it soon enough.  A friend contacted us about an organization called Rainbow Connection.  What is Rainbow Connection?  On May 9, 1980, Ron Dobson, his wife Janet, and their two children were traveling on Ron’s private airplane when tragedy struck.  Ron’s oil pump froze up, and the plane crashed.  Tragically, Ron and the children were killed and Janet was critically injured.  In August of 1980, L. Brooks Patterson, Oakland County Executive, and other dear friends held a memorial Golf Outing to raise a scholarship fund in the children’s names, raising around $2300 that first year.  From that humble beginning has evolved what is now today The Rainbow Connection, a Michigan based 501 charity dedicated to making dreams come true for Michigan children who are literally fighting for their lives.  Since 1985, thousands of Michigan children with life-threatening illnesses have experienced their most special dream come true, including my son.  This organization stepped up immediately granting my son’s wish.  I’m sure you can only imagine that with all these children, time is of the essence.  What is my point?  What is my plan?  My plans with Make-A-Wish are clear… taking the classes to become a wish facilitator.  With Rainbow Connection, I hope to learn better and more valuable ways to raise awareness for them.  At the time we had connected with them, we had never heard of them.  How is that possible?  My hope is to shoot a public service announcement, edit a compelling message, and obtain an advertising agency to help spread the word!  In the process, I shall continue to learn new, imaginative ways to bring awareness to these worthy organizations.

The only real legacy that one can leave behind is a book.  One takeaway from my son’s illness was the solidification of the power of faith.  Sitting by his hospital bed, night after night, can either make or break you.  Reflecting on life up to the point of his illness, I couldn’t help but recognize ALL the amazing things that equipped us to fight his battle.  Day to day, side by side with other parents, it was hard not to see the split path… your faith is either solidified, or dissipates.  This next chapter of my life, I plan to master the art of telling a compelling, inspirational story; a story of faith.  Via the plethora of web sites available, I will learn to get into an editor’s mindset, learn editing methods and techniques, how to make my dialogue more dynamic, how to format my manuscript, and take it all the way to publication.  My experience at Michigan State has honed my writing skills immensly, preparing me for the next step in my journey.

It has been said that the direction we take in life is not something that happens to us, it is something we create.  Although I grant that we are responsible for our own steps, I still maintain that there is a plan for all of us if we are open to recognizing the gifts we have been given.  I believe that three of my greatest gifts are visual storytelling, empathy, and writing.  Understanding that my happiness is heavily dependent on doing things to help other people, and knowing that my drive comes from what I feel enthusiastic about as positive, rewarding challenges, made it easy to map out my path for future learning.  Continuing to build my knowledge, incorporating my core values that are deeply important to how I live my life, offering what I can to a greater cause allows me to integrate my continued learning into service opportunities.  If I can help just one non-profit organization raise awareness, if I can help one more child live out a dream, if I can help one person find faith in the bleakest moments, then, I have learned, I have helped, and I have hopefully added some value to the world.

Mandy, Nick's Bone Marrow Donor, on our fundraising walk for The Rainbow Connection!

Nick meeting me at the finish line for the Make-A-Wish 50 Mile fundraising bike ride.  This was one day before we checked him into U of M for the start of chemo and his bone marrow transplant.  I had done the ride for several years, but crossing the finish line this year brought MANY tears!!

Our family walking for The Rainbow Connection fundraising walk during Nick's recovery!
