To Whom It May Concern:

When it comes to the difficulties a family faces arising from the serious illness of a child, most of us will readily agree that educational support during a child’s extended inpatient care, as well as family support and guidance, is paramount.  As a parent of a child who recently faced a life-threatening illness, my life experience and education make me uniquely qualified to assist children and families during these most difficult life battles.

As my attached resume indicates, I have a diverse range of skills, but greater than all the skills is a first-hand knowledge of what a family faces when their child is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness.  After our own ordeal, I took our entire family to a counselor to make sure we were all okay.  After a few meetings with our family, she conveyed that I had made every right decision along the way to ensure our family stayed in tact.  Of course, this made me proud, but it also made me want to help others do the same.  I am all too familiar with the issues a family faces under these circumstances.  If I can help anyone by lifting at least one burden from their heavy load, that is my goal. In addition to holding a master’s degree in Special Education, I have the real-world experience of homeschooling my 8th grade son during his eight-month isolation while his immune system gained strength after his bone marrow transplant.  We had to be creative to work around chemo-brain, inability to focus due to medications, depression, low stamina, not feeling well, and working around numerous medical appointments.  Initially, I worked with the school to develop an Individualized Education Program (IEP) designed to meet my son’s needs via a mutually acceptable abbreviated curriculum, found movies pertaining to our topic instead of having him read, read to him when necessary, and worked with museums to arrange isolated access.  My son was able to graduate 8th grade on time and is now a senior in high school having carried a 4.0 GPA all the way through.  Additionally, I can serve as a parent advisor to support a family with a recent diagnosis.  I will volunteer wherever there is a need.  I am fiercely passionate about this mission, and I look forward to assisting these deserving families.

In addition to my life experience and education, I possess the following personal qualities that will increase my ability to be successful with patients in need:

  • Sensitivity to the child’s specific needs

  • Organization

  • Diligence

  • Empathy with the pain these families are going through

  • Educational flexibility

  • Volunteering history

  • Willingness to get to know the patient, their limitations, how they learn, and adapt an educational plan accordingly

My goal is to help children and their families navigate the difficulties facing them due to illness, and I am confident that you will be able to utilize my skills in the best possible way.

Please contact me at your convenience so that we may set up a time to talk more in-depth about how my qualifications meet your specific needs.

Respectfully,

Pamela S. Karavite
